The Banjerese people have a highly appetite on the cuisine. It can bee seen when the celebrate the family events or the formal events, the cuisine becomes one of the important things to be served to the guests. Even in the daily life various of favorite food gives attention for the buyer. Not surprisingly, if we can see everywhere we can find the people who sell the Banjarese food, such as Soto Banjar, roasted fish, sour fruit, etc. Beside kinds of food, we also can find the kinds of cakes and cookies that will give the appetite for enjoyable.

All kind of food and cakes will be more attractive when they are served and traded in Ramadhan cakes fair. The Ramadhan cake fair is held every year when the Ramadhan or fasting month arrives. It is facilitated by the city government of Banjarmasin. But in the normal days we fnd the Banjarese and cakes in central market of Pasar page Kertak Hanyar, and other traditional markets in Banjarmasin. One of the popolar food in Banjarmasin is Soto Banjar. Soto Banjar which is famaous nowadays are on Jalan Sungai Jungah, Pengambangan. But for the roasted fish which is delicious is on Jalan S. Parman and Kayu Tangi.

Beside the banjarese food, there are also a lot of restaurants which serve the other food such as Padang food, Sundane food, Javanesefood, etc. And even we also can find the Chinese food, Japanese food, European fiid, and American food.

Customs and traditions which inherently exist in the social life of the people whom most of them are Islam are still kept and maintained. It can be seen on their daily life, the showing of Banjarese art like dancing, Banjarese songs, and traditional ceremonies of Banjar which usually conducted on the marriage, birth, and other commemoration of important events. The most popular artistry of Banjarese is Madihin, Japen dancing, Balamut, Hadrah, Panting music, the ceremony, of showing the bridge and the groom, Bamandi-mandi, maayun anak (rock a baby), etc. those are kinds of tourism object which is attractive.

Historical and Relegius Tourism

As a religious city, Banjarmasin has religious places which based on Islamic background. Islam had developed since the Banjarese Kingdom that carried out by the Moslem marchants who came from Demak. They traded while spread Islam until to the environment of kingdom. Since at that time, the symbol of Islam has been a part of the social and cultural life of societies. The inherintance of Islam can be seen on the buildings such as the grave of Sultan Suriansyah and the mosque founded on Jalan Pangeran, sub district of Kuin, north Banjarmasin district. The grave of Sultan Suriansyah becomes a sacred place. The other places are visited by the people as sacred places are the grave of Habib Basirih located on sub district of Basirih, and on sub district of Sungai Jingah that we call it Surgi Mufti. In Sungai Jingah we can find the old mosque of Mesjid Jami.

The development of Islam in this city is not inseparable with the role of Syech Muhammad Arsyad Al-Banjari or is more popular with the name of Datuk Kelampayan, Martapura. He was not only religious teacher or leader but also a Moslem intellectual who was respected by the Dutch. He wrote the book of Sabilal Muhtadin which was known abroad. The name book of Sabilal Muhtadin was immortalized as the name of Sabilal Muhtadin Mosque or Mesjid Raya Sabilal Muhtadin. It the biggest mosque in South Kalimantan which located in the central of Banjarmasin city. The grave of Datuk Kelampayan is on Kelayampayan village Martapura about 45 km from Banjarmasin.

In the present modern era, Islam has been developing. So there are a lot of Islamic centers in Banjarmasin, such as Iqra building which located on Jalan Brigjen H. Basri. It Becomes the place for studying Al-Quran. In the commemoration of Islamic days, we can find the artistry and Islamic culture events conducted in this city. They are Maulid Festival to commemorate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, Islamic New year or festival of Muharram, festival of Hijriah, Musabaqoh Tolawatil Quran competition, and other Islamic competition.

Handycrafts and Sauvenirs

One of attractive things for the visitor to visit Banjarmasin is various types of handicraft and souvenirs. Handicraft exist in Banjarmasin not only produced by the city people, but also from other district and cities of South Kalimantan. The arrival of tourist to Banjarmasin hoped to be able to recognize various typical crafting produced by the people of South kalimantan.

There are a lot of kinds of handicrafts produced by home industries such as jewel, various types of accessories, typical house hold equipment of Banjarese people, the origin of South kalimantan. The popular handicraft produced by the people who live in Banjarmasin city is the cloth of Sasirangan. It has a lot of combination of color and typical texture. The beauty of Sasirangan cloth has been known widely as the cloth both for men and women. Another kind of handicraft is tools household equipment made of rattan material like rattan carpet or lampit, bag, vase, and others. This city is also known with kinds of traditional herbs originated from hinterland of Kalimantan. Pasak Bumi has been very popular widely even overseas. All kindsof handicraft is very attractive as souvenirs of Banjarmasin City.

Central location of souvenirs

The goods of handicraft and souvenirs can be found in shopping center of Citra Pasaraya, in the shopping center opposite of Mitra Plaza, shopping center of Antasari, Sudimampir market, and in plazas and malls in Banjarmasin city.

The souvenir of meals such as Amplang, Kerupuk Pipih (the chips made of fish), Lempok (candied fruit of durian). There are also a lot of kinds of fresh water fishes such as Saluang, Abon Haruan, salt fish of Haruan, Tenggiri, Sepat, etc.

Banjarmasin city also has some kinds of typical fruits such as Kasturi (a kind of mango), red/orange durian, that we call it Papakin, Madang oranges, Pawon pineapple, Garuda rambutan, and Ramania ( a tiny purple fruit).














Nature Tourism

One of typical tourism in Banjarmasin is water tourism which carry out the visitor to go around some of tourist destination in Banjarmasin. The visitor carried out by boat to go along the martapura River. The traveling along Martapura river unable the visitor to see the life of Banjarese people along the Martapura river. Besides, the visitor also can see the modern face of the city from the river.

One of famous tourist destination in Banjarmasin is floating market. It is the traditional market which present the local wisdom of economic fields of societies. It also represents banjarese cultures which are inherent with the life of people along the river flows. Floating market is located on Kuin river at the north of Banjarmasin. It starts in the morning around 5 am to 7 am central Indonesian time. In this market,the seller and the buyer stay on their boat to make transaction. The goods sold such as banjarese food, vegetables, fruits and handicraft.

By croasing the Barito River, there is another tourist destination that we call it Pulau Kembang (Monkey Island). This small island is inhabited by the primate species (monkey). This species have been existed naturally in that island. This island located on the eastside of Banjarmasin. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the island by boat from Banjarmasin City.

Banjamasin is famous with city of thousand rivers, so most of the people live on the river. Some of the people build their houses on the water known as Lanting. It floats on the tree trunk. This kind of houses can be found on the area of Kuin, Basirih and Mentuil.

Administrative & Geography

Banjarmasin city is located on strategic location as the main access of Trans of Kalimantan. Land transportation connects the province of Central Kalimantan and East Kalimantan, and sea transportation conncts the province of south Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan.

Geographically, Banjarmasin city is located on the position of 3’15’-3’22 south latitude and 114’98’ East longitude. Its wide covers 72km2 or about 0.19% of the wide of the South Kalimantan province. It is divided on five sub districts, namely:

  1. Sub district of North Banjarmasin which is 15.25 km2 widely
  2. Sub district of East Banjarmasin which is 11.54 km2 widely
  3. Sub district of West Banjarmasin which is 11.54 km2 widely

The population density resided on sub district of west Banjarmasin (10,000 inhabitants/ km2). The smallest is reesided on sub district of north Banjarmasin (5.963 inhabitants/ km2).

HISTORY OF THE BANJARMASIN

The origin of Banjarmasin city

The origin of banjarmasin city comes from the long hisyory of Banjarese Kingdom. At that time it had been known the term of Banjarmasin. This term was taken from the name of Patih who has rendered many services in founding the Banjarese kingdom. He has Patih Masih who came from the village of Oloh Masih that in the term of ngaju language means the people of Malay or village of Malay people. The village of Oloh Masih becomes village of Banjarmasin thereafter.

Patih Masih and some of other Patih agreed to assign the Prince Samudera to become The King. Prince Samudera is one of the sons of Kingdom Daha who was thrown away and isolated in the village of Oloh Masih. Since that time, the Banjarese Kingdom founded. Then Prince Samudara subjugated Muara Bahan and other small kingdoms, and also dominated the river lanes where at that time became central of trading.

The deveopment of Banjarese Kingdom had disturbed the power of Prince Tumenggung. He has the King of Daha who was also the uncle of Prince Samudera. Finally, there had been invasion by Daha. The long war had made Prince Samudera had been pushed and needed some helps from Demak Kingdom. Demak Kingdom was the first Islamic and the largest Kingdom in Indonesia. Demak agreed to help Banjarese Kingdom with the term that the King and also their people declared to become Moslem. Prince Samudera agreed. The military of Demak came with Khatib Dayan to Islamize the people, and the Prince Samudera changed his name to become Sultan Suriansyah.

Banjarese Kingdom attacked and defeated Daha with the supports and help of Demak. It occurred on september 24, 1526. The event has been declared as:

1. The day of the winning of Prince Samudera. It was the origin Banjarese Islamic Kingdom.

2. The surrender of Daha Kingdom to Banjarese Kingdom.

3. The birthday of city of Bandjarmasih as the capital city of the Kingdom, it had
succeeded in dominating the rivers and mainland of South Kalimantan.

Name of Banjarmasih was called by the Dutch Banjarmasih. Until 1664, the letters which came from Nedherland to Indonesia for Banjarmasin Kingdom still mentioned the Kingdom of Banjarmasin. In the dutch, they called it “Bandzermash” after 1664 it changed to be bandjarmassingh, in the middke of 19 century, when the Japanese arrived, it mentioned again Bandjarmasin and the in Indonesia New Spelling, it is mentioned Banjarmasin.

The Brief of Banjarmasin in the past

The live of Banjarmasin city is not inseparable from the Barito River and the small rivers surrounded. Banjarmasin has played the strategic role in trading among the island since along time ago. It was due to located between Barito and Martapura River. Barito River was large and deep, and Martapura River was so big that it could be passed by the big ships. The ship of Samudera could arrive in Banjarmasin city which located 22 km from Java sea.

In the dutch era, Banjarmasin had become the harbor for all the area of Barito river stream. It was also a transist harbor for the ships which came from Singapore and Java to the east coast of East Kalimantan. The goods sent from Kalimantan namely rattan, dammar, purun mat, duck egg, fruits, plaited rattan, material, jewelry, Diamonds. The goods sent from java and Singapore such as rice, salt fish, ceramics, kerosene, salt, etc.

The industry belonged to European founded in Banjarmasin such as fabric of ice, shipyard that that belonged to BorneoIndustry Mij. The trading managed by Borneo Soematra Handel Mij, heinneman &Co, and branch office of Javache bank en Factorij.

At that time, Banjarmasin had regular and straight voyage to Sampit, Kotabaru, Samarinda, Martapura, Marabahan, Negara, Amuntai, Buntok, Muara Teweh, Kuala Kapuas, Surabaya, And Singapore.
